How to measure for the right size, which fabrics suit you, what to check in reviews and how to care for delicate pieces.

Lingerie is one of the hardest things to buy online, because small differences in size, fabric and construction change the fit. A little preparation makes the difference.

Measure yourself

Measure the band (around the ribcage just under the bust) and the fullest part of the bust, and measure the waist and hips for bodysuits and briefs. Use the seller's size chart in centimetres, and ignore the letter on the label.

Expect Asian sizing

Many sellers use Asian sizes, which usually run smaller than European or American ones. If you are between sizes, size up, and look for reviews from buyers who give their height and weight.

Fabrics

Cotton or a cotton lining is breathable and comfortable for daily wear. Lace and mesh are delicate and stretch, satin and silk-like fabrics feel smooth but can slip, and microfibre is smooth and quick drying. The listing should state the composition, and if it does not, be careful.

Construction details

Check reviews for scratchy seams, weak hooks, thin straps or wires that poke. Photo reviews show the real colour and how sheer the fabric is.

Care

Wash new pieces before wearing them. Hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, reshape and dry flat, and avoid the dryer, which damages elastic and lace.

Returns

Some sellers do not accept returns on intimate clothing for hygiene reasons, so read the return policy on the page before you order.
