Food-safe materials, heat limits, electrical safety and quality checks for kitchen gadgets bought online.

Kitchen gadgets are cheap and often clever, but tools that touch food or hot pans need more care than a phone case. Check these things before buying.

Food-safe materials

Look for stainless steel (such as grade 304), glass, or silicone and plastic described as food grade. Standards such as FDA or LFGB compliance for food-contact silicone are a good sign, but a listing that only says 'non-toxic' with no detail gives you little. A strong chemical smell on arrival is a reason to return the item.

Heat resistance

Check the maximum temperature stated for silicone and plastic tools. A spatula that melts in a hot pan ruins both the pan and the food. Choose tools rated well above your normal cooking temperature.

Non-stick and coated items

Use non-stick pans at moderate heat, avoid metal utensils on them, and replace them when the coating is badly scratched or flaking.

Electrical gadgets

Blenders, air fryers, kettles and choppers use mains power. Check that the voltage and plug match your country, and look for a recognised safety mark. Cheap electrical gadgets without safety information are best avoided.

Knives and blades

Steel quality and a comfortable handle matter more than a fancy pattern. Read reviews about edge retention, and always store blades safely.

Cleaning

Check whether an item is dishwasher safe. Parts with many small gaps trap food and are harder to keep hygienic.

Size and storage

Compare the dimensions with your drawers and counters. A gadget you cannot store conveniently often goes unused.
