How to read AliExpress ratings, reviews and 'sold' counts

2 min read · Updated 2026-10-26

What the sold number, the star rating and the reviews can and cannot tell you, and how xGadgets uses them to choose the products it lists.

Every AliExpress listing shows a star rating, a number of reviews and often a 'sold' count. Used together they are useful. Used alone, each can mislead. Here is how to read them.

What the 'sold' number tells you

The sold count is the number of units bought. A large number means many people ordered the item, which lowers the chance that it is a rare dud and shows real demand. It does not prove quality: a heavily discounted product can sell in large numbers and still disappoint, and one listing can cover several variants with different quality.

Star rating versus number of reviews

A 4.8 average from twelve reviews is weaker evidence than a 4.6 average from three thousand. The more reviews there are, the less one unusually happy or unhappy buyer can move the score. Look at the spread too: a score made of mostly five-star and one-star reviews often points to inconsistent quality between batches.

Read the middle reviews

Three-star reviews tend to be the most useful because buyers describe both what works and what does not. Look for the same complaint repeated by several people, such as short battery life, sizing that runs small or a colour that differs from the photos. One complaint is an opinion; ten identical complaints are information.

Prefer photo and video reviews

Pictures from buyers show the real size, colour and finish. Compare them with the seller's studio photos. If buyer pictures look very different, trust the buyers.

Check the dates

Products are often changed or replaced by cheaper versions under the same listing. Reviews from the last few months describe what you will actually receive; reviews from two years ago may not.

Spotting unreliable reviews

How xGadgets applies this

The product lists on this site are ordered by recent sales volume reported by AliExpress. We only list items that have sold at least 100 units recently and, where AliExpress reports it, have a positive-feedback rate of at least 88%. Items made for children are not listed. These filters are a starting point to save you time, not a guarantee of quality, so still read the reviews on the product page before you buy.
