Pet supplies buying guide: size, safety and durability
How to choose collars, harnesses, toys, beds and feeders by size, materials and safety, and when to ask a vet.
Pet products are easy to find online, but they vary in safety and sizing. Choose by your animal's size and habits, not by the picture alone.
Measure your pet
For collars and harnesses, measure the neck and chest with a soft tape and compare with the seller's chart in centimetres. You should be able to slide two fingers under a collar. Sizing labels such as S, M and L differ between sellers.
Collars versus harnesses
A harness spreads pressure across the chest and suits dogs that pull or have breathing problems. Check that straps are adjustable, the stitching is strong and the buckles are solid.
Toys
Choose toys that suit your pet's chewing strength and cannot be swallowed in pieces. Avoid items with small glued-on parts, and replace toys as soon as they are damaged. Supervise play with a new toy.
Beds and blankets
Check the filling, washing instructions and whether the cover can be removed. For older or large animals, look for support rather than only softness.
Feeders and bowls
Stainless steel and ceramic bowls are easy to clean and do not hold smells as plastic can. Automatic feeders need a reliable power supply and should be tried before you rely on them while you are away.
Materials and safety
Prefer materials described clearly and avoid products with a strong chemical smell. Many pet items are not tested to the same standards as products for people, so use your own judgement.
Food and health
Ask a vet about food, supplements, flea and tick treatments and anything related to health. Do not choose these from a listing alone.
