How to spot fake and counterfeit products on AliExpress
Warning signs of imitation goods, which product types are most often copied, and what to do if you receive a fake.
Imitation products exist on every large marketplace, and AliExpress is no exception. Some sellers are honest about selling unbranded alternatives; others suggest that an item is a famous brand when it is not. These checks help you tell the difference.
A price that is too good
If a well-known brand is offered at a fraction of its normal price, it is almost certainly not genuine. Compare with the brand's own website to see what a real one costs.
Brand-name tricks
Watch for misspelt brand names, words like 'style', 'inspired' or 'type', and logos that are almost right. A listing that never says it is a real branded product, but uses the brand's look to attract clicks, is a warning sign.
Official stores
Brands that sell on AliExpress usually run an official store. Check the store information on the listing and compare it with the brand's own website, which often links to its official AliExpress store.
Photos and descriptions
Stock photos copied from the brand, a missing specification table and vague descriptions are all signs of a doubtful listing. Genuine sellers usually show real photos and give model numbers.
Read the reviews for the word 'fake'
Search the reviews for words such as fake, copy, counterfeit or not original. Buyer photos that show different packaging or poor printing are especially useful.
Products that are often copied
- Wireless earbuds and smart watches
- Phone chargers and batteries
- Sunglasses with UV claims
- Designer-style handbags and shoes
- Branded car parts such as spark plugs and filters
Safety comes first
Counterfeit chargers, power banks and batteries can overheat and are a fire risk. For anything that handles mains electricity or lithium cells, buy from known brands or official stores, even if it costs more.
If you receive a fake
Take photos of the item and its packaging and open a dispute for an item that is not as described. Do not use an item you believe is unsafe.
