How to compare Bluetooth speakers on sound, power ratings, battery life, water resistance and extra features.

Bluetooth speakers are easy to find at low prices, but sound quality varies a great deal. These are the points that matter most.

Power ratings

Listings often show a big wattage figure. RMS power is the continuous output and is the more honest number; peak power is a short burst and sounds more impressive than it is. A small speaker that claims very high watts is probably quoting peak power.

Size, drivers and bass

Bass needs air to move, so larger speakers with a passive radiator or a bigger driver usually sound fuller. Tiny speakers can sound clear but thin. Reviews with sound comparisons are more useful than specifications.

Battery life

The stated hours are usually measured at medium volume. Expect less at high volume or with lights switched on. Check the battery capacity (in mAh) and the charging port, and prefer USB-C for convenience.

Water and dust resistance

IPX4 handles splashes, while IPX7 survives brief immersion. A rating that starts with IP6 also covers dust. Make sure the charging port cover is closed when the speaker is wet.

Connectivity and extras

Lights and gimmicks

Colour lights can be fun, but they drain the battery. Check that they can be switched off.

Reading the reviews

Look for reviews that mention volume without distortion, how long the speaker really lasts, and how the connection holds up across a room. Be sceptical if all reviews are short and similar.
