How to get the right size when ordering clothes from AliExpress

Asian sizing, size charts, fabric labels and reviews: a simple method to avoid clothes that do not fit.

Sizing is the most common reason clothes ordered from AliExpress are returned. Many sellers use Asian sizing, which usually runs smaller than European or American sizing, and the letter on the label tells you little. This method works better.

Ignore the letter, use the chart

Find the size chart on the listing and compare it with the measurements in centimetres. A size L on one listing can be closer to a European S or M. Always use the seller's chart for that specific item, not a generic conversion.

Compare with a garment you own

Lay a similar piece of clothing that fits you well on a flat surface and measure chest or bust, waist, hips and length. Compare these figures with the chart. Garment measurements and body measurements are different things, so check which the chart lists.

Use reviews that give height and weight

Many buyers state their height, weight and the size they ordered, and whether it ran small or large. Look for someone with a similar build to yours, and study the customer photos for real fit.

Check the fabric

Read the composition: cotton, polyester and blends behave differently. A small amount of elastane gives stretch, so a stretchy fabric is more forgiving. Be cautious with listings that give no fabric information, and expect the feel to be different from what the photos suggest.

Shoes

Use the foot length in centimetres and compare it with the chart, adding a little room for comfort. If you are between sizes or have wide feet, size up, and read reviews about width.

Colour and length

Screens and lighting change colours, so photo reviews are the best guide. For dresses and trousers, compare the length figure with your height.

Before you wear it

Wash new clothes before wearing them and allow for slight shrinkage on cotton items. Check the return policy and whether returns are free before ordering, especially for items that are hard to size.
